For all who will listen,
2010 is looking like a big year kids. To much joyous ardor, January 25th will see the release of some previously withheld live Hendrix recordings from 67'/68'. Sonic Youth are also working on a new album, as are The Dead Weather, the Chili Peppers, 30 Seconds to Mars, Kasabian, and Them Crooked Vultures apparently. Honestly this "supergroup" deal is getting on my nerves. There's talk of a Page/Clapton teamup in the works as well. It's really starting to feel like a big publicity stunt. If you're going to put the Yardbirds together again, I'm down for that; call up Jeff Beck! Maybe they can tour around playing some Zep and Cream. I'm just not so sure how I feel about them automatically starting at the top with new material, especially when it sucks (chickenfoot?). I saw TCV in Philly recently and they were great, I just dont want these "supergroups" to smother new talent.
Enough about this garbage though; in recent news Rivers Cuomo (Weezer) is out of the hospital and on the way back home to LA. Hopefully the Weezer tour will continue and even more hopefully maybe the crash knocked sense into him and he'll start making music that is worth listening to again.
Oh, and apparently Axl Rose has denied attacking a member of the paparazzi......right.
Didn't 30STM just release an album? And wasn't it universally panned by critics? Yep-their new album has convinced me once and for all that 30STM never really had anything original to say other than "I'm Jared Leto! I'm hot! and emo too! Swoon when I play power chords for you!" The suckage is even suckier because it was produced by Daniel Lanois and Flood, who did most of U2's albums with Brian Eno. I really hope 30STM goes away.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of bands that never had anything original to say, I'm going to disagree with you about Weezer. They've always struck me as a parody band, which isn't necessarily bad (ex. Conchords) but their shtick got old fast. It's like they keep telling the same joke over and over and keep expecting us to laugh.
About supergroups- the reason that the original great bands like Zeppelin and Peppers were great is because they had great chemistry. Trying to throw together random members of those bands and call it great art strikes me as jewel-studded regurgitation. Don't get me wrong- TCV sounds great, but I'm not sure I entirely get the point. I agree with you that new talent should get more of the limelight.
Totally. Further, have you heard that the Conchords are done?
ReplyDeleteI looked into this. 30STM's album was released a week ago. With finals i've been out of the loop and the release date had continually been pushed back due to record label complications. My apologies, I should have known about that.
In addition, Alternative Press gave it 4/5. Rock Sound 9/10. The Times and Q gave it 3/5. Though Spin gave it 1.5/5 stars and the BBC had this to say: "Its creators have tried to create a sense of drama and failed, dramatically."
So I guess the reception is mixed. I'll further look into this.
Yeah, "universally panned" by critics might have been a little strong. "Universally panned by my ears" is more accurate. The album just reeks of self-righteousness.
ReplyDeleteI heard about the Conchords. I'm not heartbroken, though. I'm actually glad they left before the joke got old.
